Denpasar City Art Museum
# 1. Will be the first stops and here you will see the existence of Badung town museum which located right in the centre part of capital city.
Based on the historical presence of the arts in Bali with an ancient culture is basically the acculturation of local culture since pre-historic era, which was also strongly associated with the spreading of art and culture from Hindus - Javanese around the 4th century, and cultures from India in the 8th century.
These thing makes the historical object collectors from foreign countries pursue the heritage of a very important ancient manuscripts of Bali, and from analysis Bosch (an observer of history) suspected, that many objects ethnografi brought out as a private collection or as souvenirs.
To anticipate the situation, then in 1910 came an idea from the assistance residence Bali and Lombok, named M.F.J Kroon to made a museum with its member: Dr. W.F. Stutterheim, Walter Spies, DR.R. Goris, Ir.Th.A. Resink, and cultural figures of Bali, ie: I.Gst. Alit Ngurah and I.Gst. Bagus Negara.
Then in 1925 finished a length building of Karangasem model, which represented the architecture of east bali, that built up by I.Gst. Ketut Gede Kandel (from Abasan village), and I.Gst. Ketut Rai (from Belong village).
The museum has a spacious area, ie: 2.600 m2, and this architecture is representing a building combination between temple and palace, that divided into 3 (three) yard, such as:
- Outer yard is the access to the field area, currently used and serves as parking places.
- Middle yard, consisted of resting area which formerly used by the king to observe situation outside the palace.
- Inner yard, are the places of museum buildings.
Finally on December 8th 1932, the museum opened for public under name of "MUSEUM BALI", which at its inception there were about 3000 pieces of objects, such as: Archeology, Historical, Ethnografic, etc and until now there are 13.008 pieces of objects.
Later in the year 1969 to 1974 held expansion of another building section towards to south area in the middle yard, and this building architecture is a combination between traditional and modern model with its main function as a place of exhibition and office complex.
Denpasar art museum precisely situated in front of the field area "Puputan Badung" (last resistance) in 1906, and Keris (as traditional weapons) ever used in warfare also became one of the museum collection, until now always being held a ritual ceremonies routinely every "Tumpek Landep" (every 210 days) by the Government of Bali.
Beside the museum, also existing a statue of "Catur Muka" (four faces) located next to Puputan Badung field area and this sculpture become the city mark from Denpasar.
To enter the museum you have to pay the entrance fee ticket which will be charged at IDR. 10.000 with the rates quoted per person.
Kumbasari Traditional Market
